Fall Back into Good Habits: Daylight Savings Reminders

With the extra hour we’re gaining with the end of Daylight Savings Time this fall, make the most of it by checking off some important – even life-saving! – tasks around your home.

  1. Check and replace the batteries in your smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and any other safety or security devices in your home. Not sure when you last replaced the batteries, or replaced the entire detector? Write the date in permanent marker inside the detector! Be sure to test the alarms as well so everyone knows what they sound like.
  2. Clean out your dyer vents. Lint is one of the most flammable items in your home – and, your dyer will be more efficient with a clear vent!
  3. Clean your gutters of fall debris – leaves, sticks, acorns, etc. Buildup could lead to a dangerous ice dam when winter arrives.
  4. Insulate your home properly. This will help keep your heating system working efficiently – keeping you and your pipes from freezing this winter.
  5. Clean and replace the various filters in your home – air, heating, etc. Another task to make sure your systems are working as efficiently as possible – and also saving you money – but a clean filter is better for your body, too!
