Vermont public pension investment income increased from $60.2 million in 2023 to $76 million in 2024, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Public Pensions.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Public Pensions examines defined-benefit pension systems run by recognized government entities, including those where public employees are paid with public funds. For the survey, local governments include counties, municipalities, townships, school districts and special districts.

The survey collects information regarding revenue, expenses, financial assets and membership for these pension plans, and more detailed questionnaires may also ask about additional topics like liabilities.

Some respondents may not submit complete data for every measure and response rates differ between data elements, which can impact whether particular statistics appear in official tables.

In 2025, nine states will have no broad-based personal income tax—Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming—with investment and capital gains tax features specific to New Hampshire and Washington.

Vermont submitted information from 10 pension systems, made up of three state plans and seven local plans. The entire enrollment totaled 70,025 people, including 65,636 at the state level and 4,389 in local systems.
