Last week, students from our Brook Street High School (formerly known as the Family Literacy Center) hosted an art show.  The exhibit displayed students’ self-portraits on canvas, mixed media collages and linoleum block prints. These pieces of work were created during eight instructional sessions over the last month through an art residency with a Burlington-based interdisciplinary artist and community-engaged educator, Jen Berger. Jen uses various modalities to engage in social issues from reproductive rights and ecological issues to racial justice and economic equality. She worked as a teaching artist for over 15 years using the role of art and creativity in social change, engagement, and protest. Jen is a rostered artist with the Vermont Arts Council. This program with Brook Street High School is an Artists in Schools collaboration with the Vermont Arts Council and the National Endowment of the Arts.

You can learn more about Jen Berger's art and consulting work at @attherootvt or www.attherootvt.com.
